Robert Barsky

Robert Barsky recently joined Carleton University’s Department of Law and Legal Studies as the Canada Research Chair in Law, Narrative and Border Crossing. Previously, Robert was Professor of Law, English, French and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. His research approach is multidisciplinary, combining social justice, human rights, border and refugee studies with literary and artistic insights into the plight of vulnerable migrants. One of his interests is refugee law. He has authored eight books, including biographies of Noam Chomsky and Zellig Harris. His passion is bringing the radical student organization called Avukah (started at Harvard in 1928 and disbanded in 1942) into Jewish history. This organization was not influential only to Chomsky’s political development but it influenced many other young Jewish writers during the 1930s and 40s.
